Pigs in a Blanket
When’s the last time you had pigs in a blanket because you’re gluten free? For me, it had been years. It was one of those nostalgic snacks I assumed I’d never enjoy again—but thankfully, times have changed! There are now several delicious gluten-free puff pastry brands on the market, and they make it so easy to recreate this classic appetizer.
A quick but important PSA: double-check the package to make sure you’re buying the gluten-free version. I learned this the hard way. I accidentally grabbed the regular puff pastry, cooked it, and ate it… and it was a painful week recovering. I even had to throw away a brand-new bag of flour, my rolling pin, and a Silpat mat because of cross-contamination. So please—always, always check the label. It’s so easy for lazy eyes to overlook it, especially when surrounded by other gluten free products.
For the sausages, pigs in a blanket traditionally use Lit’l Smokies or mini sausages. Many brands are gluten free, but when in doubt, check with the manufacturer or look for a gluten-free label.
I made these recently for a crafting night with the girls, and everyone loved them—several even said they couldn’t tell they were gluten free or didn’t miss the gluten at all. Having accidentally made the gluten version before, I will say the gluten-free puff pastry doesn’t rise nearly as much, while the regular puff pastry almost puffed too much. Still, the gluten-free version baked beautifully and tasted absolutely delicious.
I’m so excited to experiment more with gluten-free puff pastry and bring back some of my old favorites. These pigs in a blanket were a win, and they reminded me that eating gluten free doesn’t mean giving up the classics we love!
